Stewart Cink voices ‘disappointment’ over the Ryder Cup captaincy snub – “I was really hoping to be in that role”

After being snubbed for the Ryder Cup captaincy, Stewart Cink expressed disappointment. However, he praised Keegan Bradley and wished him luck for the upcoming year.

Cink has been part of five Ryder Cups, including the US’ successful campaign in 2010. Last year, he served as one of the deputies to Captain Zach Johnson. On Monday, July 8, Keegan Bradley was appointed as the new skipper for the US squad only to leave Cink disappointed.

On Tuesday, July 9, while speaking to the Golf Channel, Cink said that he was disappointed at not being chosen as the US captain.

“I was really hoping to be in that role,” he said. “I love the United States and I love the players. I have so much respect for the players and the Ryder Cup, and Keegan has got great energy and he’s playing great. He’ll do a really good job. I know he wants a team win and his roots being there in New England, he’ll be a great captain.”
“The fact that Keegan’s never been any kind of assistant role or anything, he played on some teams and played some great golf and he won a PGA Championship, those count, a lot,” he added. “Younger, for sure. Maybe closer in age range to players who are going to be on the team could be a factor. Maybe they looking to change some things.”

Last year Cink was a non-playing vice captain for the US team that faced a 16.5-11.5 loss against team Europe at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

As for Bradley, he was snubbed from the Ryder Cup squad last year despite having an impressive season with two wins. He has been part of the US team in 2012 and 2014.
