One of the highlights of Scottie Scheffler’s successful 2024 season was the 28-year-old changing his putter. For a long time, the World No. 1 golfer was using the Scotty Cameron Timeless Tourtype GSS putter. However, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, golf fans saw him debut the TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter.
This change Scheffler made came after Rory McIlroy in an interview suggested he would love to see Scheffler change his putter and try using a mallet. Recently, in an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, Scheffler was asked if McIlroy’s comments had anything to do with changing his putter.
Scheffler said in response,
“No it’s something that I thought about but, I mean, don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story right[…] It was something that my putting coach and I had thought about and then in that week…at the beginning of the year I had improved a little bit but I still wasn’t where I felt like I could be I felt like we could keep getting better.
And that was something that it was nice for me to get out of my own head, look at something different. Like I used to line up the ball where I wanted to hit it when I was putting and it would get in my head a little bit” (1:16:19).

Further, Scheffler shared he was trying to get more athletic in a manner where he is getting over, trying to see the break, hitting the putt, and letting the “results be the results.” He concluded by saying he does not use a line on the ball, but just puts the ball down and tries to be as athletic as possible.

Scottie Scheffler played at the PGA Tour Championship in his most recent appearance on the PGA Tour. At the event, Scheffler carded 65-66-66-67 to take home the Tour Championship, and thus the FedEx Cup.
