Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney boxing card: Full list of fights for next weekend

On Saturday, April 20, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney will face off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the World Boxing Council super lightweight title.

Beyond the insults between one fighter and the other prior to their fight, which will be the main event of the night, the other fights that will serve as backup were announced.

Over the last few weeks, there has been a bad vibe between Garcia and Haney which goes back to their time as amateur fighters in which they faced each other six times with a 3-3 record.

Now, they will face each other for the first time in the professional ranks.

Devin Haney’s career on the rise

Devin Haney has held the division title since 2019, when he defeated Zaur Abdullaev for the WBC interim lightweight belt. He then battled George Kambosos Jr. in Australia in June 2022, defeating the Australian to win the WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring belts to become the undisputed champion.

A rematch clause forced Haney to fight Kambosos again, where he once again beat him by decision. After that, Haney defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko in a close contest to retain the belts.

If that wasn’t enough, the 25-year-old moved up in weight in December and beat Regis Prograis to win the WBC super lightweight title.

Ryan Garcia and a loss that taught him a lesson

Garcia turned pro in 2016 and defeated Luke Campbell for the interim WBC lightweight title, but injuries and mental health issues halted his momentum.

After defeating Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna, Garcia faced Gervonta Davis in a fight he accepted more for money than reputation, but the bout was stopped in the seventh round.

After the Davis fight, Garcia got a new trainer in Derrick James, knocking Joe Goossen out of the picture, and in December he beat Oscar Duarte by KO.

There are some concerns about Garcia’s status for the fight after controversial outbursts on and off social media, and the New York Athletic Commission wants him to undergo a mental evaluation test, although the bout is already confirmed.
