Rory McIlroy confesses to being inferior to Scottie Scheffler & Xander Schauffele: “I feel like a distant third”

The 2024 PGA Tour season has been a mixed one for Rory McIlroy. He has taken two wins, at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

While he does sit third in the world rankings going into the final leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, he doesn’t think that he has been on the same level this year when compared to the World No. 1 and World No. 2, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.

Schauffele is a two-time major winner this year, while Scheffler has won six times on the PGA Tour and the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Speaking about his position in comparison to them, Rory McIlroy said:

“You know, seeing what Scottie [Scheffler] and Xander [Schauffele] have done this year — I’m third in the world rankings, but I feel like a distant third. You know, they’ve had great years, and I look at my year compared to them and, I mean, it doesn’t compare.”

McIlroy came agonisingly close to winning the 2024 US Open, which would have been his first major win in a decade. However, he eventually lost out to Bryson DeChambeau, after which he decided to take a short break before returning to compete at the Scottish Open a month later.

Rory McIlroy’s 2024 PGA Tour season so far

Rory McIlroy began his campaign at the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, coming straight off a win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. However, McIlroy finished tied for 66th at the Pro Am, marking a shaky start to his 2024 season.

McIlroy won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Shane Lowry, and then went on to win the Wells Fargo Championship, taking back-to-back victories on the Tour.
