“Not a weaker field, just a weaker Sergio Garcia” – Fans react to Tiger Woods’ ex-coach justifying the Open Championship field without LIV Golfer

Fans reacted to Tiger Woods’ ex-coach Hank Haney’s comments on Sergio Garcia missing the Open Championship. On Tuesday, Sergio Garcia failed to qualify for the Open Championship. He played at Liverpool’s West Lancashire Golf Club, which hosted one of the four final qualifying events for the last Major. Garcia shot 71 and 70 over two rounds and finished in sixth place. Only the top four advanced to the Open Championship as Garcia missed the opportunity.

Watching Garcia miss the Open Championship field, a user asked Hank Haney about his thoughts on Garcia failing to make it to the Open, to which Tiger Woods’ ex-coach replied,

“As they like to say, he knew the consequences. So it makes perfect sense to some people to have a weaker field,” Haney wrote.

Taking note of Haney’s comments, fans shared their reactions in the comments section, with one claiming that Sergio Garcia’s absence didn’t make the field any weak.

Some people also scorned Sergio Garcia for his choice of joining LIV Golf.

“He chose the money and less time away from family. His choice and he has to live with it,” a user wrote on X.
“Garcia is done in competitive golf. That’s why he went to LIV,” another wrote.
“Is it really a weaker field for a guy past his prime who couldn’t qualify That’s why he went to Liv,” a user claimed.

While some fans claimed Sergio Garcia outside the field strengthens it:

“Not having Sergio does not weaken the field. It makes it strong because someone qualified for it- which he could not do,” one said.
“García is a weak crying baby, no longer one of the best players. He’s in the place he deserves,” another wrote.

Garcia isn’t in the top 50 of the OWGR and hasn’t won a major in the last five years to make it to the Open Championship. Additionally, he didn’t win the BMW Championship or the Players over the previous three years. Therefore, the LIV golfer had to bid goodbye to his 2024 Open dream.
