After a thrilling Azerbaijan Grand Prix, reigning world champion Max Verstappen had a clear warning for McLaren: “Don’t underestimate us.” The Red Bull driver, who is known for his fierce competitiveness and direct approach, issued this statement following a weekend where McLaren showed a surprising level of performance.

McLaren’s recent upgrades have pushed them closer to the front of the grid, raising questions about whether they could challenge Red Bull in the upcoming races. However, Verstappen remains confident that his team will stay ahead of the competition.

McLaren’s Surge in Performance

McLaren has been steadily improving throughout the 2024 season, with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri making significant strides. During the Azerbaijan GP, McLaren’s pace was evident, particularly in qualifying and race pace, giving Red Bull and Ferrari some serious competition. This resurgence by McLaren has ignited conversations about a potential rivalry with Red Bull in the latter half of the season.

However, despite McLaren’s upward trajectory, Verstappen is adamant that Red Bull is still in control of the championship race. “They’ve made progress, and that’s good for the sport. But at the end of the day, we know what we’re capable of. We’re ready for whatever challenge comes our way,” he said confidently.

Red Bull’s Unwavering Dominance

Verstappen’s remarks are a reminder that Red Bull has been the dominant force in Formula 1 over the last few seasons. With multiple race wins and a commanding lead in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships, the team has set a standard that others are still striving to match.

“We’re focused on maintaining our performance and improving in areas where we know we can get better,” Verstappen added. “There’s no room for complacency.”

Looking Ahead to the Next Races

As the season progresses, the battle between Red Bull and McLaren is expected to intensify. McLaren’s newfound form could see them challenging for podium finishes more regularly, but Verstappen’s warning serves as a reminder that Red Bull is not ready to relinquish their dominance anytime soon.

The next few races will be crucial in determining whether McLaren can truly challenge Red Bull for race wins or if Verstappen’s confidence will continue to translate into on-track success.
