Jon Rahm has pulled out of the Spanish Open pro-am event while citing personal reasons as he awaits the birth of his third child.

However, he’s still aiming to tee off on Thursday ahead of the tournament if he can jet over from Arizona in time. Rahm had to withdraw from the DP World Tour’s Open de Espana Pro-Am on Wednesday, but he’s keen to make it back to his homeland to play the following day.

The news follows Rahm’s recent withdrawal from the LIV Golf season finale in Dallas, where John Catlin stepped in for him on Legion XIII, and Cameron Smith’s Ripper GC clinched the $14 million top prize and the team championship title.

A DP World Tour spokesperson relayed to GolfMagic: “Jon Rahm has WD from the Open de Espana Pro Am due to personal reasons. His wife is expecting their third child, impacting his travel from Arizona to Spain. He still intends to play [in the tournament].”

Rahm and his wife Kelley are on baby watch this weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they reside with their two young children, Kepa, aged 3, and Eneko, aged 2. The family is reportedly at a local hospital in anticipation of their new arrival, reports the Mirror US.

Rahm’s participation in the Spanish Open is pivotal for his Ryder Cup aspirations, as he needs to compete in three of the five remaining events to qualify for Team Europe in 2025. Yet, there’s a chance he might miss the tournament if Kelley’s labor continues.

Rahm became the biggest signing for LIV Golf at the end of 2023, leaving the PGA Tour after inking a massive deal worth around $500 million.

This has meant that he, along with other golf stars like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Tyrell Hatton, have had to participate in more DP World Tour events to qualify for the Ryder Cup.

Players are required to compete in at least four DP World Tour events per season to maintain their cards and be eligible for Ryder Cup selection, but Rahm has only played in one qualifying event in 2024 – with plans to participate in three more before the year ends.
