“I’m just getting a little too used to feeling”- Rory McIlroy stomachs second loss in a row at BMW PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy had another disappointing week playing at the DP World Tour event. The Northern Irish golfer narrowly missed out on winning the Irish Open earlier this month and then lost in a playoff at the recently concluded 2024 BMW PGA Championship. He missed two titles in a row.

McIlroy started off well at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship with a solid round of 67. He carded 68 in the second round before shooting 66, and then finally a round of 67 to wrap up with a score of 20-under. He finished in a three-way tie with Billy Horschel and Thriston Lawrence. However, it was ultimately Horschel who won the event after defeating the two in a playoff, and the Irishman settled for a tie in second place. Despite the loss, McIlroy is hopeful for upcoming tournaments.

“The nice thing is there’s next year and the year after and the year after and the year after. If you think of my career as a 30-year journey, it’s only one year in a 30-year journey, and hopefully the other 29 are a little more productive or a little bit better. I have certainly had years where I’ve felt worse,” McIlroy said (via The Guardian).
“When you get yourself in contention so much, inevitably you’re going to have disappointments. Unfortunately I’m just getting a little too used to feeling what it’s like when you do and hopefully that tide will turn,” he added.

Rory McIlroy has come close to winning quite a few times this year but unfortunately ended up in second place. His biggest loss was at the 2024 US Open, when despite being in good form and in contention to win the title, he lost momentum on the concluding holes. He shot three bogeys on the last four holes, ultimately losing the title by just one stroke to Bryson DeChambeau.

At the 2024 Irish Open, he was edged out again in the final moments, losing the title by just one stroke. It was his third runner-up finish on the European Tour in 2024.

But despite the ups and downs, McIlroy has had a few moments of celebration. He has won three tournaments in 2024, including two on the PGA Tour and one on the DP World Tour.

McIlroy has competed in 19 PGA Tour events in 2024 and won two of them, including the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship. He also recorded seven finishes in the top 10 on the circuit this year.

Meanwhile, on the DP World Tour, he participated in four events, winning one—the Hero Dubai Desert Classic—and finishing as the runner-up in the other three.
