‘Bit Like How Tiger Woods’: Wyndham Clark Finds Himself a New ‘Tough’ Pedestal After Brutal Olympics Backlash

It’s not a secret that Wyndham Clark has been on the receiving end of much hate. The American golfer had found himself earning the ire of many after his qualification into the Olympics team, instead of Bryson DeChambeau. However, fast forward a bit to the 2024 BMW Championship, and the backlash seems to have died down. Moreover, support for the athlete appears to be pouring in, so much so that it looks like he is feeling just like how Tiger Woods does!

“Golf is so tough,” divulged Clark in an interview following the third round of play at the BMW Championship, “Not that I’m at this level, but I feel a little bit like how Tiger is because he always had the most amazing fan support.” In addition, he also confessed how he felt the same as the 48-year-old legend would when he was walking through while everyone would just be pumping him up and encouraging him, “So it’s been really tough for me to just calm down before I hit my next shot.”

But how did it all turn around for Wyndham Clark? Well, the answer to that lies in his recent performances as well as the fact that he is currently playing in his hometown, at the Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado. “It’s probably a couple hundred,” recalled the golfer when asked about the people who have come out to support him, “Like people I really know and are close.”

Is Wyndham Clark the new Tiger Woods or just another overhyped golfer? React!

The 30-year-old then disclosed,“There’s so many kids from my high school, guys I went to college with, and obviously my cousins and then their kids, grandparents,” while alluding to the spectators at the Castle Pines Golf Club. The 2023 U.S. Open champ then made sure to mention how “cool” such a situation was; “seeing faces that I haven’t seen in a long time, I feel like if I went through everyone in the crowd, I feel like it would be about 1000 people, which is pretty cool.”

And such support from outside the greens appears to have tremendously helped the professional in his run at the BMW Championship. Wyndham Clark is currently placed at T5 after the third round of play owing to his figures of 7-under overall. He did so by putting up figures of 72-68-69 over the three days all the while dishing out 14 birdies, 4 bogeys, 2 double bogeys, and an eagle over the same. And this performance appears to have truly helped him get rid of the backlash he received in the past few weeks.

Wyndham Clark and the hate he received during the Olympics

“I just think Bryson was more deserving of the opportunity,” responded a fan after they spotted Wyndham Clark alongside the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele at the Olympics. Even so, the athlete didn’t let too much of the same get to him and finished T14 with a score of 11-under 273 over the four rounds in Paris at the Le Golf National

But unfortunately, such a finish wasn’t enough for some followers in the community either. Some even commented, “We could have gone Gold, Silver with Bryson baby,” after witnessing Scheffler raking in the gold medal. However, at the FedEx St. Jude Championship that followed soon after, the American finished at T7 while putting up 12-under overall at the end of the event. Couple that with the recent performance, and the fact that Wyndham Clark is playing in his hometown, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him feel like the legend Tiger Woods.
