Jon Rahm was seen embracing Angel Hidalgo immediately after suffering a dramatic playoff defeat to his countryman at the Spanish Open on Sunday.

Rahm had forced the contest into ‘extra time’ with sensational birdies on both 17 and 18 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, matching Hidalgo’s 14-under. This followed a strong performance from Rahm on Saturday, which left him just two shots behind Hidalgo going into the final round.

With the home crowd chanting for Hidalgo, both players headed back down the 18th hole to start the playoff. Despite Rahm finding the rough with his tee shot and Hidalgo driving onto the green, both made birdie and were sent back to the start.

Rahm’s driver again veered left into the rough, but this time with a much more challenging approach. After overshooting the green with his wedge, Hidalgo seized the opportunity by chipping onto the green for an easy birdie putt.

Rahm managed to save par, leaving Hidalgo with a chance to clinch the win – which he did. Overcome with emotion, Hidalgo, who had tearfully earned his DPWT card just two years prior, covered his face with his hands, reports the Mirror US.

After sharing a heartfelt hug with his caddie, Rahm showed sportsmanship in defeat by congratulating Hidalgo with a hug and a few words. Despite his disappointment at missing out on a fourth DP World Tour win, Rahm demonstrated true class.

After securing victory, Hidalgo reflected: “Two or three years ago, I was in the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon – without playing, I just come here to Madrid to see the tournament. To be here and win the tournament is unreal. Oh, my gosh, it’s amazing.”

Jon Rahm managed to participate in the Spanish Open after appealing his DP World Tour fines incurred for his LIV Golf involvement. The top Spanish golfer has been outspoken about his refusal to pay these fines but submitted an appeal right before the event, enabling him to continue playing on the tour.

This was crucial for Rahm’s chances of making the Ryder Cup team next year as players are required to play at least four DP World Tour events annually to maintain membership. His appearance at the Paris Olympics counted as one event, while his runner-up finish at the Spanish Open is another notch under his belt.

Rahm is set to tick off the remaining required events with forthcoming appearances at the Dunhill Links Championship and the Andalucia Masters.
