After His $100M Partner’s Surprising Stunt, Rory McIlroy & His Colleagues’ $9M Aim Faces a Roadblock

How can you describe Rory McIlroy‘s situation at the BMW PGA Championship? We will say unusual. The Northern Irishman encountered a shocking situation in the first round of the tournament. It happened on the fairway, where the golfer’s clubhead detached from the shaft, flying down the fairway while making a shot. Yes, it might be unusual to see, but there is something more at the tournament.

Although the golfer’s TaylorMade club’s face was broken he shot 67 with 5-under in the first round. As per reports, he has been using TaylorMade clubs since 2017 having an impressive $100 million sponsorship deal. However, what happened next isn’t related to equipment at all but the weather instead.

DP World Tour recently shared a post on X, announcing that “Play was suspended at 11:58 local time due to thunder and lightning.” Only a few pros managed to tee off in the second round, excluding Rory McIlroy. Meanwhile, other golfers had to wait an hour for further updates before resuming play in the $9 million tournament, with $1,530,000 going to the winner. After around an hour, the DPWT shared another update saying “Play was suspended at 11:58 local time due to thunder and lightning.”

The final round of the BMW PGA Championship expects even more cloudy and rainy weather. Thunderstorms are also expected. However, there is a chance the rain could occur at night, and if that happens, we might enjoy golf without any further delays. It’s still hard to say how things will go from here.
