Sergio Garcia has declared a win with his Fireballs squad at this week’s LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas would rank as one of the biggest achievements of his playing career.
Garcia leads the Fireballs into the LIV season finale, taking on some old friends in his quarter-final clash on Friday. Garcia and co will take on the all-European Majeskticks setup, which includes three of his former Ryder Cup teammates in Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson.
Throughout his career, the Spaniard has announced himself as one of the great matchplay competitors, particularly on the Ryder Cup stage, having won more points than any other competitor for his team in the event’s history.
Garcia’s six wins as a Ryder Cup player is one of his great achievements, alongside winning arguably golf’s most coveted prize in the Masters title at Augusta National in 2017. Alongside this, the Spaniard has four wins at his favourite course in Valderrama, as well as a Players Championship crown on his CV too.
Ever a lover of team golf though, Garcia admitted clinching the title ahead of his LIV rivals this week would see it take pride of place alongside his green jacket and multiple Ryder Cup triumphs in the trophy cabinet. ” A Team Championship with the Fireballs would be tremendously big,” he told Mirror Sport from Maridoe Golf Club.
‘It is difficult to know exactly where you would put it until you win it and really feel it. But it would definitely be up there with the Masters win and Ryder Cups.” Clearly still a passionate team golfer, the former PGA Tour star added: “It is something I have always loved.

“The team spirit and team aspect of it. So to be able to do that with these guys would be amazing.” Garcia and his Fireballs teammates appear to have hit form at the right time too, having continued an impressive run after the Spaniard picked up a memorable double on home soil at LIV Andalucia around a Valderrama course he knows so well.
Since then, Garcia’s team have finished tied-fifth, fourth, and third in a strong finish to the regular campaign. The former Masters champion has also re-found his individual form too in 2024, ending the year third in the regular standings, getting the better of the likes of Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton.
For Garcia, there was little doubt that he would re-find the golf that had previously made him one of the world’s best. “I felt like played quite well last year,” he said. “I was close a couple of times to winning so it is obviously nice to be able to have the season that I have had individually.
“It shows the work I have put in not only physically, but mentally. So that has been very nice to see. I have felt good pysically for many years now so that obviously helps. Then it is just a matter of believing, being in the right frame of mind and getting things to go your way quite a bit.”
Garcia became one of a number of big names to commit to the LIV setup upon its formation two years ago, and he believes this has benefited him both on and off the course. “It definitely benefited my life,” He said of his LIV switch. “It has made my life a lot more manageable when it comes to things like family, so in a way that helps [his game].
“To feel like you are more settled, not only financially, but more as a family, time-wise. The time you are able to spend with family, resting and getting your body rebooted and recharged for the next season. That is something before we didn’t really have time to do and now thanks to have three or four months off, you can work on your body and game a little bit more, as well as spending quality time with your wife and kids. All those things definitely help.”
