Ian Poulter issued a cryptic message while PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan gave a press conference – as progress over a merger with LIV Golf continues to stall.
Plans for a stunning ceasefire in the civil war between golf’s rival circuits were announced in the form of a “framework agreement” over a year ago. However, in spite of a self-imposed deadline being set for the end of last year for a binding deal to be reached, there talks appear to be at an impasse.

A meeting between PIF chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and PGA Tour representatives took place earlier this summer in New York City, the status of talks since the remaining largely mired in mystery. With the American circuit’s chief Monahan speaking at the season-closing Tour Championship, LIV star Poulter’s words may have been in reference to the ongoing negotiations.
Taking to his Instagram Stories to embark on an unexpected address, the former world No. 5 appeared did not speak about any subject directly but did write: “I just have to laugh and sigh at the same time. Sad. I wonder if anybody will have the balls the [sic] question it or pull it apart.
“I bet they don’t. Let’s wait and see. IYKYK (if you know, you know),” he said in a vieled message, before going on to add: “Or are the puppets going to be the puppets. I wonder.”
Meanwhile, the aforementioned Monahan updated fans on the discussions regarding the planned PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger, saying: “I appreciate the question, and I understand the question. I think the best way for me to respond to that is when you look at where we are right now, we’re in regular dialogue.

“We have the right people at the table with the right mindset. I see that in all of these conversations, and that’s both sides. That creates optimism about the future and our ability to come together. But at the same time, these conversations are complex. They’re going to take time. They have taken time, and they will continue to take time.
“As I sit here today, I think the most important thing for us and our obligations to our fans, our players and our partners is to focus on what we control, which we’re doing, as I outlined, and to continue to carry this momentum forward.”
Ultimately, the PGA Tour chief kept his cards closeto his chest on the subject, however – preferring to simply confirm that talks are continuing on the prospect of a binding agreement. Monahan added: “I’m not going to negotiate details in public or disclose details or specifics. All I can say is that conversations continue, and they’re productive.”
