Ahead of the 2024 Tour Championship, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has given an update regarding the PGA Tour and PIF negotiations. Last year, the PGA Tour announced a shock merger with the Saudi Arabian PIF, taking the golf world by storm.
However, the merger does not seem to have made much headway since its announcement. While Jay Monahan has been giving regular updates regarding the deal, the timeline for the same still remains unclear. As the 2024 PGA Tour season nears its conclusion, Monahan has shared insights into the current state of the merger discussions.
Here’s what Monahan said according to No Laying Up, a Golf Podcast:
“Have not agreed to a deadline. I don’t think we want to restrict ourselves in that way.”
Adding to his comments, Monahan emphasized the Tour’s goal of reuniting all golfers worldwide, according to Jack Hirsh of Golf.com.
“These conversations are complex. They’re going to continue to take time. We are ultimately trying to bring the best players in the world back together,” he added.
The original deadline for the PGA Tour and PIF merger was set for December 31, 2023.
Jay Monahan confirms that PGA Tour and PIF merger negotiations will not be done in public
Ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Jay Monahan clarified that the PGA Tour and PIF negotiations will not be done in public. However, he expressed optimism that the momentum generated by the players, the Tour, and the 2025 schedule will contribute to further innovation in the sport. Speaking via ASAP Sports, he said:
“The conversations with the Public Investment Fund and then an important part of the journey that we’re on this year and that we’ll continue to be on, and as I’ve said before, you’ve heard some players comment on, we continue to be in regular dialogue. I’m encouraged by that. But I’m really not going to offer more than that and not negotiate in public.”
Currently, the FedEx Cup is all set to begin its final leg of the playoff, the Tour Championship, It will be held from August 29 to September 1 at the East Lake Golf and Country Club.
