“Bad for pretty much everybody”: Golf analyst concerned by Jay Monahan’s statement on PGA-PIF deal

Golf analyst Rex Hoggard joined the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex and Lav and commented on PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan’s recent statement on the PGA-LIV deal, reflecting on his concerns regarding the same. Discussing the proposed agreement with the media at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, Monahan said that the deal between the PIF, which primarily owns LIV Golf, and the PGA wasn’t imminent and could not be guaranteed within a time frame.

This PGA-LIV deal has been delayed since last December, by when both parties had agreed to reach a framework agreement for a proposed merger of the two golf series, but two deadlines have passed since then and neither PGA nor LIV has indicated that they have reached a conclusive decision.

The last deadline was between March and April, before the Masters Tournament. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour entered into a deal with Strategic Sports Group worth $3 billion in January to form a new entity called PGA Tour Enterprises, where PGA players will have equity shares based on their career achievements. Recently, after Monahan’s statements on the PGA-PIF deal’s blurry prospects, Hoggard highlighted the delay and said:

“I think it’s become less and less likely that we are going to end up with any kind of arrangement… I don’t think going down this path is right for the game because I think a fractured game is not only bad for the fans… it’s bad for the media partners, it’s bad for the corporate partners, it’s bad for pretty much everybody.” [24:20]
Jay Monahan on the LIV-PGA deal

Jay Monahan talked about the status of the LIV-PGA deal in a press conference before the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He stated that the conversations were complicated but didn’t give a specific update about the deal.

“They’re very complicated discussions… There’s a lot of elements to them. When you have the level of interaction, we’re continuing to meet and move forward and discuss and debate, you can’t be anything but hopeful… As it relates to times and time frames and where we are, I’ll just say we’re in a good place with the conversations. That’s the most important thing,” Jay Monahan said.

Currently, the PGA Tour is in its fall season and the FedEx Cup playoffs are underway. As per the PGA Tour’s 2025 schedule, the first event will be the Sentry.
